What to expect when you’re cared for by a MidPacific hospitalist

What is a Hospitalist?

When you’re admitted to the hospital, your care may be managed by a hospitalist—a doctor who specializes in caring for hospitalized patients. While your primary care physician manages your health in the outpatient setting, hospitalists are experts in inpatient medicine.

This specialization means your hospitalist:

  • Is in the hospital and available to see you multiple times a day
  • Coordinates your care with nurses, specialists, and other team members
  • Communicates with your primary care provider about your hospital stay
  • Plans your safe discharge and follow-up care

During Your Hospital Stay

Our hospitalists will round on you daily, often multiple times per day depending on your condition. We encourage you to:

  • Ask questions — We want you to understand your care plan
  • Share concerns — Tell us if something doesn’t feel right
  • Involve family — Family members can be part of care discussions
  • Know your medications — Ask about any new medications and why they’re prescribed

Going Home

Before you leave the hospital, your care team will:

  • Review your discharge instructions with you
  • Explain any new medications
  • Schedule follow-up appointments
  • Send a summary to your primary care provider
  • Answer any remaining questions
